Planes ain't plain
I was looking at the 2010 Carbatec catalogue and was amazed at the difference in plane design these days.
The Rali ones look like the inside of an office stapler while some of the smaller veritas ones wouldn't look out of place on an executive's desk.
I'm definitely getting old.
Cheers,
Jim

True - the latest Veritas block planes (DX60/NX60) look like they were developed in a wind tunnel.....
Good bragging material..."My block plane has a much lower drag coefficient than yours"

But they weigh about 500g grams more
Buy the best tools you can afford and you'll only cry once...

All that extra weight helps when towing something through the aforementioned wind tunnel.

All this aerodynamic stuff is very overrated anyway - why did God give the tortoise a drag coefficient of 0.0001?
Those Veritas block planes look slippery enough to glide across the wood, out of my hand, slip through the air in a gentle curve, and impact on the shed floor......
I'll have to stick with my trusty Record low angle block plane for now. Trusty???? Who am I trying to kid? Its actually a piece of junk...

LOL
So, natural selection being what it is, you'd think that the ugliest tortoises with the bumpy and wonky shells would be left alone by the eagles, breeding generations of increasingly non-aerodynamic tortoises......??
Reminds me of a Far Side cartoon.......a falling cat, feet downwards, fur streaming in the wind, with a worried look on its face, and a receding airliner in the corner of the picture. The caption...."Fluffy suddenly realised that it wasn''t going to matter if he could land on his feet from 30,000' up.."

I agree, some of them look weird as with some of the newer cordless drills.
I have no problems with non traditional looks and designs if they improve performance and comfort in fact I would be in favour of the idea.
Having wanky trendy designs for the sake of it with no practical purpose turns me away from purchasing those items - like what would people say if they caught you using such a tool- Wood Borer

Regards to the new LV block plane, no matter how well it works, it looks plain ugly. Maybe I'm a almost middle-aged/really old bloke who like things the way they were/are.
But I do love my LV BU Smoother.

Has anyone actually used a Rali? It looks as if it would shred your fingers.

You seen a 38 year old play with toy cars and go, "toot toot" with Thomas the Tank Engine trains with a 2 year old? It keeps me young. at the same time as I get older.

I think that most people rate the Rali as a throw away plane. I have not used this and can not say much about it other then I did not like the feel of it.
The Vertias is nice and fits in the hand. The LN one for me was just too small. The old Stanley that I got from my dad is rusty so I have some work to do.
