Polish the brass, or leave as-is?
The fine users of this forum graciously assisted me in identifying my circa 1860 Stanley Rule & Level co. No.10 level (greatly appreciated). It's in terrible condition and I'm wondering what I should do, if anything, to improve its appearance. The wood is definitely weathered and I'd like to protect it by cleaning it with something like formby's build-up remover and then use some formby's lemon oil treatment. I've done this in the past with saw handles and it definitely helped. As for the brass, what's your opinion on polishing it? Currently, there's potentially 150 years of petina on the brass.
I apologize if this has been brought up before -- I did a search, but didn't find anything.
Thanks,
Dave

Do you want to use it or collect it?
If you want it for a display piece do you intend to sell it in the future?
If you intend to sell it just give it a gentle clean with some mild soap and water to remove any dirt and grime. Leave the patina intact.
If you want to keep it and admire it till you are gone or can no longer gaze on it lovinly then shine that sucker till it glows. Those were the droids I was looking for.
