Default pony jorgensen deep reach pipe clamps - what's the "spring bushing"?

just acquired a few of the these pony jorgensen deep reach pipe clamps -- specifically, these ones from timbecon

the timbecon description says (emphasis theirs):

Note: There is a spring in the packaging that is needed for the pipe clamp to work. Please do not throw out.
there's two springs, actually. one is obviously what makes the clutch plates work, the other is this one:

the diagram on the packaging calls it a "spring bushing", and shows it threaded onto the opposite end of the pipe from the fixed jaw. it does indeed fit neatly on the threads!

it seems like its only purpose is to prevent the sliding jaw from sliding right off. but if that's the case, i'm confused about why timbecon thought the warning necessary, because it seems like i could happily lose it with no loss of function

    is there something i'm missing?

I think it is just another one of Timbecon's confusing terminology.
Note: There is a spring in the packaging that is needed for the pipe clamp to work. Please do not throw out.

At the bottom of the details it just says it's to act as a stop so screwing it onto the threaded end would stop the head from inadvertently sliding of. The design of it is not a spring, more like a Helicoil. As you say, it will still work without it.

The video on PJ’s website confirms the position. Could it be that if the sliding head comes off the pipe the clutch plates and springs fall out?

nah, the clutch plates and spring are pretty well captured. you can take them out and put them back in, but the spring is strong, so it takes some wrestling

i guess the clutch plates might gouge up the threads on the way past though, so maybe the main point of the stopper is to protect the threads

thanks all, i'll stop worrying about it
