Group Purchase - Brass back stock for sawmakers
Following a suggestion from WoodWould in another thread,
I propose a group purchase of 3/4 x 1/4 brass stock, which would be slit in a machine shop to take the saw plate and then you just cut to the length required.
In order to keep things simple, this group purchase will be for one item only.
1. 3/4 x 1/4 ONLY Slit to take 0.020" saw plate
Who wants some brass back stock for making dovetail/tenon saws?
Please indicate what total length you want.
Regards
Ray
PS. The 0.020 slit should take saw plate + - a few thou either side of the nominal 0.020

I would be interested in buying about 1 metre, but I was wondering if it might be a good idea also to do a group buy of the .020" saw plate as well, so all the metal has been supplied?
The other item that it might be worh seeing if we can get supplied in reasonable bulk is some saw nuts. We can all use the Norse Woodsmith's Poor Man's Saw Nuts, but some standard nuts would be great to be able to purchase (once I get some miles under the belt on my new vintage metal lathe I may become a supplier, but don't anyone hold their breathe waiting for that time to arrive!).Cheers

A metre for me too please (and some saw plate if available too ).
.
I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.

Jeremy,
I believe saw making is a terrific lead into the world of tool making, and if some of the difficult to make elements are sourced, the project is within almost everyone's capabilities.
These group buys can quickly gather a momentum of their own, and if I read between the lines of Rays very kind offer, that is what he is trying to avoid. Making the thing completely option free is important for a couple of reasons....we've seen the blades with or without bevels, 5 different widths, with or without back iron or screw....you know the way it will spiral out of control....and TS is one hell of an amazing person to do what he does, but some of us would quickly be looking for a single bedroom apartment if we took on what he does
I'd encourage participants to opt in on the narrow specs, and source other materials themselves, or run another group buy, side by side with Ray's offer perhaps...
Regards,
Peter

Peter
I know what you mean, and I have some (quite a lot) sympathy with your view.
But I do think that at least the saw plate would really help get the group buy up to the stage where:
- we are buying enough to get some bulk buying power (with corresponding price advantages); and
- those of us who are interested but a little apprehensive about having a go feel that at least the "sourcing" issues have been dealt with and so it is worth having a go at the making side of the project (remembering that most of the Forum members are handy with wood, but reluctant to do anything with metal other than screw it into wood ).
Saw nuts would be nice, but aren't essential - we can use old ones from stuffed antiques or make the Poor Man's alternatives.Cheers

Just so that we don't head off in the wrong direction here, this group buy is for the slit brass back stock only. Other group purchases can be organized if desired, for saw plate, stock for folded brass backs, split nuts and so-on.
The hardest thing to make (with typical home workshop resources) is the brass back.
So this group purchase is just for the slit brass back only. ( and at this stage I am just trying to get an idea of quantity so I can check the pricing)
So, with that clarified, who wants some?
Regards
Ray

I'm seriously thinking about it.
In regard to options, I tend to agree with Peter, it may be nice and convenient (for everyone except Ray) to get everything in the one buy, but it will be quicker and easier if we have no options (other than length). If saw plate or split nuts are required, then maybe start another group by.Cheers.
Vernon.

Yes please Ray.
You guys are great.
Caring sharing, bouncing off each other. Great to see.
I'd be interested in jumping in on this. (I still haven't made those planes but I may as well add a saw to the list)
Ray, let me know if you you'd like a hand with the running around to source the brass. George White?
all the best

PS one length? 3.6m?

What is the likely cost of brass after machining?
I too would like to order plate together with brass. I suppose concurrent orders are ok but I would be worried one went ahead and one didn't.prozac
