Well, I've got saw nuts and I couldn't be happier.

Now I can finish that saw I was working on.
    Cheers.

I have used my first pair of the nuts to handle a carcase saw:

Blade - no name blade given to me by ian (many thanks) - I have sharpened it as a 12 ppi rip

Handle - based on RayG's picture of the Tyzack open handle, made from Studley hardwood (I think it is brushbox) - the thickness is a fat 1" to give my long fingers more room to grip..

    Photos to phollow this evening.
    Cheers

    Ray,

Did you end up with any spares or are they all accounted for?

    Here are the photos.

The discolouration of the brass is because I used a piece of dirty W&D paper to work the handle's Danish oil finish and it deposited itself on the brass and I quite like the look! Honestly I'm too lazy to get it off.

As the second photo shows, the counterbore for one of the nuts is too shallow, but I was tired and wanted to take the photo and go to bed! so tonight I will deepen that couterbore (and maybe a couple of others) and make everything snug to the surface of the handle.

One good thing about using a thicker piece for the handle (as far as I am concerned) is that you can make the handle more rounded to the hand. That makes it feel much more comfortable for me. I have found the same with plane totes as well.

And the dohickey on the right below the saw in the first photo? Home made split nut driver. I filed the blade from an old scraper. The brass allthread will be cut short and peened (another victim to fatigue - the other task last night involved flattening some 2.4m x150mm x70 mm boards by hand and two hours of scrub and jointer planing by hand makes me tired - but it is cheaper than a gym membership).

Thanks RayG for the split nuts and the handle pattern. And thanks to ian for the blade. I have one more blade from ian - I think it is going to become a dainty dovetail saw (but I might file it cross-cut as I already have a nice dovetailer that is filed rip, but a crosscut that size may be helpful in some situations (like cutting shoulders on small tenons).
    Cheers

    Hi Jeremy,

Looking good so far, I would like to see pics of the finished saw. That handle style lends itself to the chunkier look you are going for. I generally trial fit the whole assembly, and then pull it apart for finishing and final clean up, so I don't get finish on the screws.

MrJamieR payment received, thank you, I will post on Monday.

FunkyChicken could you re-send your PM with the payment details, I had to clean out my PM's (was full) and have deleted it.

    Regards
    Ray

Will get the photos up in a couple of days.

AS for the trial fit - I would usually do something like that, but I wanted to use those beautiful nuts! A little elbow grease and 1200 W&D cleaned everything up nicely.

Another good thing is that the split nut screwdriver works - now (to coin a phrase) I can get all my saw nuts nice and tight. A couple of saws that I had (incl a Robt Sorby 9 ppi crosscut panel saw) had become really hard to use because the nuts were loose - now they are holding like champs.

This episode in saw handle making encourages me to think about rehandling a couple of good blades that I have that have horrible (to my hand) handles -something else to go on the round tuit list
    Cheers

Well, I've finally managed to finish my $5 saw (now a $15 saw) using Ray's nuts - see thread http://woodworkforums.com/showthread.php?t=86050
    Cheers.

MrJamieR split nuts have been posted.

Jeremy, nice work good to see the split nuts getting used for a worthy cause.

VernonV, now it's a $100 saw! looks good.

That pretty much wraps up this thread, (Mods, you could probably drop the sticky now, thanks for the support).
Thanks also to everyone who bought split nuts, and thus making the cost lower for all of us.

    Special Thanks

Thanks again to the generosity of Mike Wenzloff, without whose kind help this group purchase would not have been possible.

Now get out there and fix some saws, (or make some)..

    Regards
    Ray
