Ray Iles Mortice Chisel
I have a bunch of vintage Oval Bolstered Mortice Chisels (or English Bolstered Chisels, as Joel at Tools for Working Wood terms them), but recently had the yen to get one of the modern D2 Ray Iles versions. Having heard so much about their durability, I have been curious to see how they hold up in Aussie hardwoods.
Ray Iles 1/4" in the middle, flanked by 1/4" and 1/2" Wards...
The short test run of the two 1/4" chisels in some hard Jarrah produced super performance from both. In this very brief time (half a mortice each), I could not tell the difference.
Time will tell which edge lasts longer, and by how much. I'll keep you all informed.

Thanks very much for that Derek.
I'm looking forward to hearing more from you. I've almost decided to get some of these bolstered Ray Isles chisels. (I always buy myself a christmas present!)
Everything I have read about them is positive. Of course, I don't have the vintage ones as an alternative."... it is better to succeed in originality than to fail in imitation" (Herman Melville's letters)

I have one Vintage Bolster and love it, if I had the money, I would splash out for a set however I think I will opt for a set of Harold & Saxon Bolster Chisels, see this thread.

Those designs don't turn me on. The classic OBM chisels, on the other hand, are great to use and have a special style.

I like the idea of an 'oval' bolstered chisel - but I've never tried one. If you close your fingers into a chisel grip, the shape is more oval than round. They look like they would be very comfortable - which is what Chris Schwartz had to say, if I'm not mistaken.

That is not a true oval bolstered mortice chisel - you know that. It is a flat rubber top oval bolstered mortice scraper.
I use these a lot when I am attempting to escape one of the psych wards. They make effective lock picks. On hot days they may also function as icecream scoops.
