Default Re-engaging with an old friend

I’ve had this block plane since I was an apprentice, I bought it from Complete Hardware in Eastwood in 1987, and have used it almost every day since. About 10 years ago, it fell of the dropsaw bench and broke the screw and adjustment knob off the mouth plate at the front. Somehow the brass knob was lost. I drilled it out and tapped a countersunk stainless machine screw into it and secured it with a big brass wingnut. It was fine but I always told myself that I’ll make a new knob for it “one day” Today I finally made it the day. It came out pretty good and feels great to use again, should be fine for another 32 years.

Good to hang onto old friends, Rb, familiarity is comforting!

Could you briefly describe how you made the knob, in case someone else needs a similar fix?

    Cheers,

    Cheers,
Yes, I bought a bit of brass hexagonal bar, chucked it in the lathe, and turned the shoulder down. Then drilled and tapped the hole in that end to suit the screw I had put into the mouth plate years ago. Then I parted it off and turned it around and machined the hollow for my finger in the top, a quick polish and it was done.
I’ve been meaning to do it for 2 years since I bought this lathe but just kept doing other things for the multitude of machines I’ve procured for the new workshop, as well as making my home workshop here bigger to fit the lathe and mill inside, rather than under the deck covered in plastic. I’m getting there slowly. Finishing off my boat will be the next big project.
