Re-tapping for tote/handle threaded rod?
Most older planes have a strange thread for the tote rod. (7/32 bsw 20tpi) I read somewhere that you can retap easily with a 1/4 bsw which is also 20tpi. Making a new rod with this thread would be easy of course.
Has anyone done this and, if so, were you satisfied with the results?
Cheers,
Jim

Yes and yes. I bought an old No.5 off eBay and it was a complete dog of a thing. It was described as "in good condition", but the handle had been recently glued on. The brass nut was jammed in the top of the handle, but there was no rod.
I bought a length of 1/4" allthread from Bunnies and tapped the plane body to suit. I haven't had a problem with it to-date..
I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.
Regards, Woodwould.
