    Default Record 044

I am looking for a set of cutters for my record 044, also the depth stop. I haven't used it for nigh on 30 years and when I got it out I could not find the cutters and the depth stop seems to have disappeared too. Will settle for 1/8 and/or a 3/16 cutter
    Thanks...
    Jim

    Hi Powderpost,

The cutters for Record 044 planes are unique to the 044 (no other Record or Stanley uses the same irons), so unless you can find someone who's lost/damaged their 044, you're unlikely to get another set.

The good news is that Ray Iles (UK) makes replacement sets. The bad news is that he's not VAT registered, so you have to pay UK VAT as well as Aussie GST if you import a set.

An alternative is to pick up some other plow irons (e.g ex #45/55/405) and machine the adjuster grooves into the back.

    Good luck.

    Cheers, Vann.

The better news is that you will have to pay Oz GST only if you are a company/business importer or if the value of the shipment exceeds $1,000.

That's a better price than Ray Iles, as the £34.50 price will drop by around £5 when VAT is removed. Ray's price is £32 (but no VAT refund).

You can make your own #044 blades.

Stanley #45 blades are the same thickness. All you need to do is add the slots (on the #044 blades) with a Dremel or small angle grinder. Takes a minute. The #45 blades are available freely and cheaply on eBay (USA).

A depth stop from the #45 can be used in a #044 if you first drill/bore out the depth stop hole in the #044. Also available freely on eBay USA.
