    Default Record 050 nicker?

    Hi Guys,

Just purchased a record 050 plough plane. Unfortunately it has only one nicker and screw.

Any idea where I could get a nicker? I have emailed Chris at the Tool Exchange and checked ebay etc but strugling. I have a spare for a 78 that I could grind off one of the spare legs, but I don't really want to do that If I don't have to.

    Cheers

    Hi yowie,
    Woodworks Book and Tool Co.
have them listed for 78s. Might be worth a try.

I don't think it will be compatible. I know when I acquired a Record 045 it too was missing a nicker and one from my Stanley 45 wouldn't fit; the screws were definitely different.

To be honest these nickers are bit rubbish anyway; they are very hard to get perfectly aligned to the blade edges. I gave up with them a long time ago and follow a knife line instead.

I bought some of the 72 nickers and found they needed a lot of fettling to fit my 72. My point is that I think the design of some parts changed over time and a recently made part might not fit an old tool perfectly. I have still to get good results with the nicker on my 72 so I am not satisfied that the fit is satisfactory at all even after fettling.

I reluctantly cut down my spare 78 nicker. A little fettling and it does a fairly decent job. The screw needed a bit of filing as it was too long but looks the part now.

You've got me confused, Bruce - the Record 072 is a shoulder plane & has no nickers, the Stanley 72 is a chamfer plane & has no nicker. I presume you had a slip of the finger and meant 78?

Yep, you got it! Slip of the brain rather than the finger!

And after writing I headed down to the workshop and had another go with the 78 nicker. I remembered I had fixed a slight nick in the corner of the blade that made all the difference in performance and had not tried the nicker since. Resharpened everything and re-aligned things properly and it works better. Next challenge is to come up with a solution to blow-out which seems to be an inherent issue with the design when planing cross grain. I suspect a sacrificial backing piece is the answer.

That, or cutting the across the grain on the outward end of the cut.
