Thread: Record 405 multiplane - slitting cutters - Do the Veritas spurs fit?

Hi Evan; I think you’ve got your parts mixed up, mate!

The Stanley/Record “spurs” or “nickers” are the 3-lobed things buried on the outer sides of the skates; I can clearly see them in photo 3 of the other post so you’ve got them. They are a bit of a PITA to use as they are fixed depth and need to be sharpened; and their purpose is to cut a knife wall in front of the main blade when cutting across the grain.
The “slitter” is the big pointy stabby thing you are indicating in the picture you pulled from online. That item lives on the same mounting point as the rear depth stop on the main body and is used as a method of roughly cutting off thin strips from the edge of a plank, you use it to deeply score each side and then snap it off. It is ground to a spear point on both sides, ie it has FOUR edges to grind/hone.

The Veritas nickers/spurs you are showing are their version of the Stanley/Record spurs and because they can be adjusted for depth they are much superior than the 3-lobed things. They look extremely similar to the Stanley/Record slitter, but are MUCH smaller and only ground on two edges, the backs are honed flat the same as a normal blade.

To be honest the slitter on the 405 is now a pretty useless item, it was designed for an era where there wouldn’t be a handy table saw available and slitting off a bit of Astrogal moulding, planing the back of it smooth and rejointing the edge of the plank it came off was quicker than cutting it off with a handsaw.

Do you have a copy of either the 405 manual or a Stanley 45 or 55 manual? The slitter and it’s uses are covered in them.

Don’t know whether the knurled knob belongs with the 405 but I’ll stick them both in the mail to you. Might not get to the PO for a few days, though.

This Record 405 is great.

All the blades are now sharp and the body parts de-rusted. I'm about to spray it up with a VERY trendy spray job in metal paints.

Im using my good spray gear, metal etchers and premium 2k auto paints. It should be schmicko

Homey, again thank you. Came in yesterday.

Spent 3 hours brightening it right up and making it razor sharp. Tricky little bugger... Hard to hold at a firm angle.

Not much progress on the resto. The unreal heat and intense smoke has put outside work off for a bit...
