Thread: Record Carriage Makers Plane 010 1/2

Any suggestions where I might get a new blade or even have one made.

my guess is a Record bench plane blade of the right cutting width can be ground to fit

A stanley 10 1/2 blade should fit no problem. try wood works book & tool. this is still a curent stanley model. the lever cap should be a standard #4 lever cap i think. you would be better off finding a nice clean #4 record of the correct vintage & swaping the lever caps.

No it's not- it's narrower, but a #3 will fit.

I hope yours turns out well, Pen. I spent a deal of time on a Stanley 10 1/2, including fitting a new blade, only to find I had a lemon that I hardly ever use. The handle is too close to the adjuster screw, making it uncomfortable to use, even with the standard 'three-finger' grip. The frog assembly just isn't right, on mine, no matter how I adjust and fit everything, so that it chatters like fury if you dare to run it over a knot. Fortunately, I have better alternatives - even the old 78 is a solider bit of equipment when rough rebating is called for, so my 10 1/2 hardly ever sees the light of day....

Well there you have it. A #3 record is a bit of an obscurity though. A #3 stanley lever cap should be obtainable new, wont be real cheap though.


Lots of people would like a nice clean straight 10 1/2. Well spotted.

Lie nielsen do a brand new one of these (10 1/4 bench rabbet plane) - the replacement blade may fit - AU$74.00

(or you could buy the whole plane for around $550.00)

Thanks everyone for the replies to date.
Some relevant facts that may assist are that the blade width is 2 5/32" and the Lever cap is 1 3/4'' wide.
Ian W - I found a post on a similar subject some months ago thanks to Apricotripper, where MajorPanic suggested a source of parts in Sydney was at:

I checked it out and they have a Stanley #3 Lever cap for A$67.85. I will see if I can find a blade in there also.

My Lever Cap is OK so I will also see if I can just get it re-chromed. Still looking for suggestions as to where.

Derek - I checked the St James Bay Tool site and I may just have to go the there. See they have a Stanley 010 1/2 for US $275, Similar price to the Lie Nielsen. I will contact them to see if the Stanley and Record are the same sizes.
Any further suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
