    Default Record Plane #8

Some years ago I bought this Record #8 along with a few other planes. Did my version of fettling them (user standard) and was reasonably pleased - except for the #8.

So the Record was put away in a dark shed with me muttering dire things like, Pommy rubbish, mumble mumble &^%%^ etc. You get the picture.

Christmas 2009 my mate was visiting (former fitter & turner - diesel mechanic - steel fabricator etc). Looks at the Record and says -hmfh (well know tradesman's exclamation meaning - you dumbkof!). "Of course the Record is not working well. It has a crack in each side of the body behind the mouth. Plus the cap iron and lever iron are for a smaller plane, probably a 4 1/2".

O.K. I spring into action. I took the plane in to Jim Davey, when he was at the Canberra working with wood show in 2010, to have him weld the cracks. That was enough for that year, I was exhausted.

This year I purchased a Lee Valley 2 5/8" blade and matching width cap iron. I know, I know, you are positively amazed at how quickly this project is running

The last thing on the list is a 2 5/8" Record Lever Cap i.e. the one suitable for a #8 plane. Does anyone have such a beast in captivity? I would be happy to buy one or trade the surplus to requirements Record 2 5/8" blade and the 2 3/8" cap iron and lever cap.

I hope I have entertained you with this little story and that someone can help out with a lever cap.

    Cheers

I can't help you, but Stu Minuskin has some #8 lever caps for Stanley planes and that should fit until you can find a Record.

Thanks JMK, I had checked out Stuart's site and Hans Brunner's site but I really want a Record. I suppose if push comes to shove I may get a Stanley lever cap with no trademark.

    Cheers
