How did they do it in the old days? Did Mr Disston have a crew of very experienced filers who just knew where to file 15tpi or 4 tpi etc or was there a mechanical aid used?

    Cheerio,
    Virg.

P.M. - Not much, because I use the template only to lay out a notch for each gullet. Once that's done, (about light 2 strokes on each), I remove the paper and finish filing the teeth as outlined above. I found early-on that if I left the paper on whilst filing the gullets, it shreds & clogs the file & is a general nuisance. So I aim for a fairly weak bond.

I started out using PVA, which was ok as long as I filed the teeth as soon as the glue had dried a bit, then removed it. One time I glued on a bunch of strips on Sunday evening & left them until the following week. By then, there was a line of rust all along the edge of the paper, and the strip was really difficult to remove (& so was the damn rust! ). So next I tried some old shellac I had mixed up, and that did the job. For the last few, I didn't have any shellac left, so used Shellawax & that worked ok, though took longer to dry out. I've found I have to be sparing with whatever I use, or the paper gets soggy & either tears or stretches as it's smoothed out, which can lead to a few choice words!

    Cheers,
    IW

    Cheers,
Thanks Ian. I can well picture the frustration you went through. Will work something out when the time comes. Posted photo's of my 1st saw handle. Let me know what you think of the shaping.
