Replace verticle bubble in old spirit level
Hi, I am going to try to repair my mums very old spirit level (it was her dads and he passed away a few years ago), for some reason this level means a lot to her, we had a handyman over doing some work and mum walked outside and noticed him hitting the top of the level with a hammer (trying to hammer something down) she stopped him but then noticed the vertical bubble on the end had no fluid in it anymore (must be broken), I can see how to take off the middle metal plate to adjust the centre bubble but how do you get the vertical end bubble/vials out ??, there looks to be a big brown plug in the end inline where it is but I am not game to starting prying it apart, I really want to have a go at fixing it to give for her birthday but don't want to break it, I will post a pic of the level and hope to god someone has some insight, thanks again for taking the time to read.
PS if I am in he wrong section I am sorry, maybe admin can move it to the correct section.

Could you post some different pics? Maybe a shot of the whole level? Also, there's probably a brand marked on it somewhere, that might be useful too.We don't know how lucky we are......

Also how can I clean up the timber ??, can I just sand it with 400 grit and re stain it, or is there a better way.

Timber could be cleaned with a damp rag and then brightened up with a wipe down with rice bran oil.
I wouldn't sand it, I'd keep it as original looking as possible. If you insist on sanding, start with higher grits than 400 (1200 maybe), note what they do to the finish......you don't want to take much off a level.
I'm slightly surprised that nobody has jumped on this thread and said "I've got 17 of that type of level and this is what you want to do." Maybe we're only good for planes, saws and drills. We don't know how lucky we are......

I'm not familiar with the brand and the pics don't show enough detail.
Are there any fastenings on the side edge(s) or end to retain the vial cylinder in the body of the level?

The Brand
The initials stamped into the horizontal bubble,F.H.P., are for F H Prager.
founder Fritz Prager, a German migrant.
F H Prager are a major distributor of tools. Many are house branded.
This does not mean that the level body itself is one of theirs as they did sell replacement bubbles.
Maybe someone already replaced one.
Regards
Bob
