Replacement handles - hand planes
For anyone who wants to find a source for decent wooden replacement handles for hand planes, try
http://www.toolsforworkingwood.com/M...t/merchant.mvc
They offer replacement front knobs and totes to fit all of the Stanley sizes plus a few others.
I have been looking for replacements for the blow-moulded plastic handles fitted to a new Stanley #6. Up until recently, I could only find replacements that would fit the smaller Stanleys (#5 and lower). The bigger planes, including the wider smoothers like the 4½, have a hold-down screw at the leading edge of the base.
Anyway, this website offers the range. With the $AUS being so strong, the prices look pretty good, too.

For anyone who's interested (especially in the light of recent posts about buying items from overseas sources), I ordered a front knob and tote for my Stanley #6 from this mob.
They acknowledged receipt of the order on 1st March and I received the handles today (22 March) via US mail.

US$6.30 for postage. The total bill on my Amex card came to a bit less than $50 (Aus).
