    Default Restored Stanley 244 mitrebox

I bought this mitrebox from forumite Steve (fineboxes) about 3 years ago and had used it frequently before deciding to rejuvenate it. It was quite usuable, had been sprayed with ?Killrust, was missing the stock guides, the tie bar and the rear upright cap and some of the screws. As best I can determine the box dates around 1916, the latest patent date is 1912, it does not have the leg openings for the length stop.
I de-rusted, primed and painted the box. I replaced the tie bar and rear upright cap with pieces fashioned from bright mild steel. I did not bother with the stock guides as I don't think I would use them.
I reshaped the blocky saw handle which I am sure is not the same age as the box, however it is a good saw and works well and is the right size for the box.
I found some american thread pattern machine screws which fit although they are different head patterns to the originals. Attached are before and after photo's - the real highlight was finding the original makers plate beneath the paint.

Nice job! The reworked handle is lovely too.
...I'll just make the other bits smaller.

Lovely to see one in such good nick. I've a 244 and a 246 and use them on a regular basis. Still looking for a depth stop tree, but use a bit of wood on some 5/8 threaded rod which seems to work.

Very satisfying to see something restored to good useable condition like you've done there, Watty. And you found a real handle inside that mawkish lump of wood that was stuck on the end of your saw!. Double merit points!

    Cheers,

Really thanks for the box in the first place Steve, I'm pretty chuffed with the way it's come out, Ross
