Restorers Barn. Planes and more.
Gday folks.
Shameless plug here I guess but it seemed a shame not to let the plane nuts know.
We have been slowly stocking up on old hand tools of late and are sitting on a heap of handplanes, metal and woodies, spoke shaves, Disstons etc.
The Restorers Barn is in Mostyn Street Castlemaine (I believe that the forums origionated just down the road from here)
Well worth a look in if you are nearby and are at all interested in planes, I've found it good to have a good fondle of a few obscure brands that you see on the bay but can never quite take the risk on. uno figure out the crap from the cream. The collection is made up from a few different sources and includes a little of everything. I have my eye on a nice Turner #5 still in its green box... but I'm trying to stay off the slope or at least somewhere near the edge with a safety harness.
I'm happy to play the postage game.. I only work friday and saturday and we dont strictly do phone orders but if there is something you are looking for I'll gladly have a dig through on your behalf.
attached a few pics of some of the gear.
All the best folks.
btw, I'm not the owner of this business, just a counter jockey trying to keep the boredom at bay.

I'd like to get some nice user tools.
Some planes. I don't mind a bit of rust, don't like cracked totes or beds. Those would be Stanleys.
I'm thinking Disston saws, a rip, a fine crosscut, and regular crosscut. Preferably good handles. Rust again is okay.
A few representative prices would be good. If you're bored. I would like to drive out and check, but I'm in the middle of moving house. What's the drive like from Glen Waverly area? (I'm from America, so not so sure where I am all the time, but have a GPS)
Cheers,

Better get on your bike then TS!
Was there on Wednesday, some nice stuff there, also some ordinary stuff, but very tempting.
Was looking for a nice block plane, but they didn't have too many to chose from.
Only live 25mins up the road, so didn't have to make any decisions.
See, there are some advantages to living out in the sticks.
Whenever I'm in Castlemaine I never miss a visit to the Restorers' Barn, also the bookshop in Castlemaine is worth a visit, Stone's I think.

Stones is great.. there's also a good one on the road out of castlemaine towards daylesford, don't know the name but its on your left on the midland in campbells creek. My favorite book came from there last year.. one of those ones that you have to hide behind the old womens weeklys and pray that no one finds it while you save the pennies.
Prices... mmmm yeh, ranging from quite ok to a bit exy. I'm sure I'll get bored tomorrow and post a few examples.
If anyone does come down.. mention the forum, a couple of us will know what you are on about.
we also have a limited amount of spare parts under the counter.. no totes tho
we also have a searching service.. if there is a plane (or anything for that matter) that you are having no luck finding we will keep an eye out for you and ring you if and when we find one.
don't know if phone numbers are the go on here.. but you'll find us in the book.

I have been to Restorers Barn a number of time over the years and can highly recommend it. A day trip to Castlemaine is a great way to fill the weekend ..... nothing beats a country bakery!
I purchased a great hammer from RB when I was just getting started in woodworking for the sum of $8 and it is still going strong. From my experience the prices have gone up since Castlemaine and Dalesford became trendy day trips from Melbourne, but it is still worth the trip.
Is the bookshop the old converted house on the left hand side on the way out of Castlemaine that seems to have every room filled to the ceiling? Now proudly sponsored by Binford Tools. Be sure to check out the Binford 6100 - available now at any good tool retailer.

I hear you.. It has been an interesting learning curve for me working in the place (only been with them for a short while.
I like many on this forum am one of those people who just isn't (or wasn't) happy unless his latest hand tool was found for next to nix at a garage sale or buried in a box at the back of some store. Great Fun and I still love finding something really tasty for a fiver but more and more these days I see sense in paying for the tool I need and getting on with the job at hand. A bit like the slippery slope of collecting and curing your own timber, if I'm not careful I can end up spending all my time running around the countryside chasing the arborists, rough turning, sealing, weighing, praying etc.. then get a huge shock when I realize I can have a pallet load of tassie exotics for a weeks wages. not that chasing trees is a bad thing just have to remember to keep it sensible and try to remind myself of the false economy of spending too much time chasing cheap tools and wood.
As for the Barn prices.. I think they are probably on pay with brunner or the tool exhchange with the exception being that we are not the experts that those boys are which can work either way.. we may overprice one plane thinking it to be more than it is.. or we may under price something a little more special because we don't have the time in the day to do the research.
Anyway.. I've had a few requests and will take some photo's and get back to everyone over the weekend when I'm back in at work.
I'll post them here as well, postage is at cost for all orders.
ps..bakery is gone

Chisels?
G'Day RB,
Do you stock chisels? in particular E.A. Berg or Titan?
I live in sydney but would be keen to buy some and have them posted if the price is reasonable. I'm looking for a basic set of six in the 6-30mm range.
Cheers
Coxy

Oh and if anyone else knows - is there a similar shop in the sydney area where one can browse second hand tools.
Thanks

That would be right!
When I first moved to Australia I was living in Dry Diggings...just outside of Dalesford & Hepburn Springs and I went to the Castlemaine movies a few times with my wife ( sat on the old couch in the balcony ), but I never knew this establishment existed
Taking a few days off soon...looks like some day trips may be warranted...
