    Thumbs up NRMA insurance

    So,

Although I was a little skeptical, the NRMA have proven to be quite efficient. Assessor arrived Tuesday to look at the site (my delay as Monday didn't work for me), fire investigator checked everything today. Late this afternoon I recieved a call and an email from the NRMA saying not only was the claim approved, but that they would let us know if the determination was that a faulty appliance caused the fire so we could try to recover the cost of rebuilding the garage (Dad did not have building insurance- just insured his treasures).

So the clean-up begins in earnest. Finding the survivors will be the best part.

    Peter

    Default Clean up started

So we got into the shed for about an hour last night and opened a few drawers that seems OK. Not all good news, but dad was please to find these were OK.

2013-04-19 22.01.14.jpg He found it hanging on a fence in the scrub when he was a kid - it's a pair of 1942 US army wire cutters. A little elbow grease and some oil and they're OK.

The chisels are a different story. Found a few bergs, titans, a couple of wards and a few I've never heard of. Hopefully we'll find more today.

Peter I hope the remains of the shed are some how weather proofed as this rain will do nothing to assist in preventing rust but could help in washing soot and ash away. By the way thats all great for veg gardens.

Those all look like a clean up and check for temper loss and back into use with handles. If you like I can make new ones to suit.

Hard to say from appearance alone, but it's likely some reached a temperature high enough & for long enough to soften them, & some may not have. Easiest way to find out is to clean up & sharpen them. Your dad should be familiar enough with them that he can probably tell by the way the stones cut & a wire edge forms if they have changed appreciably. Re-hardening is easy, it's the tempering that takes the real skill, so if you can get help from someone who has it, you're home & hosed.

I was also going to offer to make some handles for you, but I am pretty much out of action 'til September. If you still need any by then, PM me. Don't chuck away the partly-burnt handles until you make some measured sketches. I think it would be nice to make the new handles as close as possible to the originals he was used to (unless he wants to try a different pattern, of course!)

    Cheers,
    IW

I hope you just mean 'snowed under' and not literally 'out of action'!

S'okay, Matt - it's neither scenario, in fact. I'm hale & hearty, but 2,000 Ks from my shed. I've been dragged kicking & screaming out of retirement to do some teaching while someone takes maternity leave. I did think seriously about bringing some tools and trying to keep a few jobs rolling while I'm here, but in the end decided it was all too hard. I'm home for a 4 week break in July, so may reconsider & bring something down then if the withdrawal symptoms get too severe. l'll be very anxious to check out the gear when I get home - have to remember to at least greet LOML as I run from the carport to the shed..........

    Cheers,
