    Default Has Santa been yet?

It's that time of year again and I'm in the lovely position of having a few extra dollars to splash on some dark sider gear.

This year I'm continuing to slowly replace my old/crappy tools with better quality items. Yesterday I replaced my Stanley 60 1/2 block plane with a shiny new Veritas DX60 block plane. The Stanley will be modified for carpenters duties and never seen on the workshop bench *ever* again.

I'm still waiting for the H&S chisels that were last years present.

    What has Santa brought you?

    Dave.

I forgot what I put in my Santa letter.
Guess I'll have to wait until the 25th to see what (s)he brings.

Bought one of each of these today.

Had to pay cash, as there is no budget for them, but hopefully I'll get to do something useful with them over the Christmas break. I've been finding that using second rate versions of these has been causing problems.

I hate Carbatec - every time I go in, swearing I'll only buy one thing, and always come out with more.

This just arrived in the post today ! Well I actually had to go to the Post Office and pick it up since they are on strike but I don't care. The 20 TPI Veritas Dovetail Saw. It's a beautiful tool.

It is beautiful. Haven't put it to wood yet, but keep thinking about it - it really is just like Christmas! I didn't realise they'd brought out a 20tpi, but I think the 14 will be ok - it was the tiny set I really wanted.

Nice dovetail saw! Now where have I seen one before ... ?

I spoiled myself with a new mallet. I am on record for saying that anyone who buys one who can make one is crazy. So I am crazy. I have made my share in the past. This one is special. It is a Blue Spruce ...According to the BS website, "The head of the mallet is made from beautiful figured maple that has been totally infused with an acrylic to fill every wood cell."

Alongside a plane hammer I made for contrast.

    And using it ..

I am impressed. I really wacked this mortice chisel as hard as I could. This has destroyed a few Jarrah mallets in the past. This time, not a scratch.

    Regards from Perth

That's a beautiful mallet, Derek. I investigated making one, but Santa couldn't fit the lathe on the sleigh, so that'll have to wait until another year. Might think about a spokeshave for a birthday soon though. I missed out on one of Luban White's mallets on ebay a while ago too.

In the end I settled on a cheap compromise ($29), particularly because I could take it home with me as I want to use it over Christmas to keep the kids in order, and maybe to practise some dovetails too.

The saw was a spur of the moment purchase, driven mainly by the tiny amount of set. Again I could make one, learn to sharpen it, experiment with amount of set etc, but what I really want to do is make stuff, so when I saw the Veritas was only $89 I crumpled.

Last day of work today, then two weeks of (nearly) uninterrupted wood working.
    Cheers, Richard

Derek that mallet is really really nice. So does having no lathe mean I'm allowed to by a mallet ? and mean that I'm NOT crazy ?

Yes.. I wonder where you might have seen 'em before Actually thanks again for the review. It was the deciding factor on where the dollars would go.

Purchased a Carbatec bench holddown and a shoulder-vice screw but I'll have to wait till next month for the full "Yaay Santa!" effect because I'm waiting on the tail-vise screw.

That really is a lovely mallet Derek. I wouldn't have been game to use it though.
