    Default Saw sharpening file holder.

    There are some very good designs on the market now including those supplied by Isaac. For those of you who would like to try and make there own I made this simple design recently.
    I do most of my hand saw sharpening on high tpi backsaws and this file holder is set up for 3 square needle files only. The holes on the front steel plate have been elongated slightly to provide extra scope to the rake angle.

    Certainly a bit less elaborate than the competition, Stewie!

    Do you find having a bubble is easier to use than simply using a slightly longer stick? I ask that because I've been testing a Veritas guide for a few months. It doesn't use a bubble, just a pair of brass 'wings' that you keep level with the tooth line of the saw. The wings on the guide are a bit shorter than the simple sticks I used to use, and it takes me a little bit more concentration to keep it level as I file. I'm finding it easier as I get used to it, so it's probably just that I needed to adapt.

    Cheers,
    IW

    Cheers,
    Hi Ian. Prior to using the new file holder I relied on a length of round dowel fitted to the end of the file. When I changed to using a magnifying lamp for ease of filing high tpi saw teeth, I found that the domed magnifying lens on the bottom of the lamp was giving me a distorted view to keeping the dowel pointing at 180 degree's. I have since then found the bubble level a much more reliable guide to follow.

    Stewie;

    Additional. I have been using a precision machine vise for a fair while now to refine the amount of set left on each side of the saw plate. This is after the use of a conventional pistol saw set. I use blue masking tape as a packing agent and apply it to each smooth jaw making sure enough room is left underneath for the saw teeth to remain clear. For me 1 layer is an adequate thickness. The results have been excellent.

    Stewie;
