    Default Shoot Up...or...shoot Down.

This Derek Cohen bloke is a bit of a worry, while he doesn't actually drag you down the slippery slope he sure puts a lot of grease on the skids.
After reading his magnificent article on LA Planes I realised that a LV LA Smoother was going onto my "Must Have" list. I'd been thinking about a low angle block for some time, mainly for shooting, and decided that for another 100 bucks I could have a smoother.
So having recently, very foolishly, declared to SWMBO that I had just about all the gear I needed, I realise that some work (grovelling) will have to be done before I can even think about getting one. I'm going to make my shooting board to pass the crawl time. Which leads me, finally, to the point of this post.
Shooting boards. The benefits of a ramped shooting board are self evident, but my question is this Do ramped shooting boards slope down away from the user as a matter of tradition or is there a benefit over a slope up away from the user. The pros and cons I see as follows.
Slope down. Pro.Easy to hold against the backboard. Con. Plane action will want to lift the piece being planed.
Slope up. Pro. Plane action will hold the piece down. Any face measurements easily seen. Con. Harder to hold against the backboard.

Opinions appreciated. With a bit of luck I may have started WW3 (or at least a major fight)

The design I like has two opposing slopes. The workpiece slopes up away from the front and the ramp slopes down towards the back. This creates a 'V' shape in profile, like a valley. So it's like your 'Slope up' version. The down slope on the ramp just makes it easier to use. The force of the planing motion should hold it tight against the fence at the rear and, as you say, hold the workpiece down at the same time.

For having harboured such heresy you ought to be excommunicated, or at least serve a pereiod of suspension.

BTW I agree with your comments about Derek, but I am still trying resist sliding too far down that slope.

    Peter.
The problem is, once your on the slope theres no way back. It starts off real gentle, ya don't even know your'e moving, but gradually ya get faster and quickerer.

    Regards
Outback (with the wind fairly whistling in his ears)

P.S. LV LA jack for me, any help in convincing SWMBO greatly appreciated. I've used up all the must have excuses for a while.
    Boring signature time again!

Thanks for the greenies folks but Silent is the only one to voice an opinion on shooting boards.
