Thanks again to everyone for their input & opinions.
I am, like others who have not actually tried UHMW as a shooting board runway, sceptical with regards to its benefit over MDF / stable hardwood, and a sprinkling of wax. I am satisfied with using MDF & wax, and if I was not intending to build another & hopefully better shooting board, then I would probably stick with the MDF. However as I am going to rebuild I have ordered some UHMW & will then be able to do a direct comparison of the two & decide if there is any real benefit and if it is worth the additional fiddle. Then I shall get on with building with or without the UHMW.

I did see a comment somewhere that the Shooting board was a relatively new tool which surprised me. Have you any idea when it came into use?

It seems that a shooting board with a UHMW runway was not meant to be for me. After several calls to Carbatec and getting assurances that my order had been posted, checking with the post office & more calls to Carbatec head office. After they actually did a trace they finally discovered that my order had indeed been posted but to a different post code, despite me having previously registered all my details with them.
I was then told that as soon as they got the parcel back they would send me another order, to which I responded no thank you, I would prefer you cancel the order & credit my account, and was then told yes, as soon as we get the parcel back.
not the first time I have experienced problems with Carbatec but this will definitely be the last.
Please Lee Valley open a store here !!!
I guess this is the God of Wood telling me that a runway of Wood and Wax is the best option.

I know you believe you understand what you think I wrote, but I'm not sure you realize that what you just read is not what I meant.

I was told the policy was to pay after they rec'd the goods back, it was only after I asked to speak with the Manager I got an agreement from him to make a refund. He did apologise and said that when you make an online order the info is transferred manually from one system to another ??? which caused the problem and that this is being addressed.
I thought it was handled a bit offhanded & they did not seem to give even one hoot.
Totally different from dealing with Lee Valley.

I'd wondered about this. The last two times I ordered from Carbatec online they sent the package to my previous address. This was despite me entering the address correctly, and also checking my account settings on their website to make sure it was right. Luckily their shipping company was good and phoned me when they couldn't find me in Melbourne. I don't buy from Carbatec any more.

I finally got around to making another shooting board, and initially used some UHMW tape to trial this on the plane ramp. It is a good product, but the difference between it and well polished MDF is not noticeable.
I finished up using a recycled laminated kitchen cupboard door for the base, a piece of leftover plywood for the top surface, and pieces of leftover NGR & Kauri for edging and the fence. I created a ramped top surface by cutting wedges out of Radiata offcuts, and glued a small piece of laminated mdf to the bottom of one wedge for the plane to run against, opposite this is a piece of NGR to create a track for the plane to run in.
