I needed a mitre shooting board the bottom last pics and after making it I decided to make new ones of the other type I already had.
In fact it was Derek Cohen's old post on his website when he made one from jarrah that inspired me to do so. Aesthetically they are much more pleasing to the eye and easier to work with than my old ones.
The shellac and wax makes the plane and work glide. The work doesn't stick to the board making it harder to push the work into the plane and it's beauty inspires me to build beautiful things.
It's psychological as well as functional.

Beautiful boards! The shooting plane deserves boards as nice as these, none of the run of the mill plywood ones

Beautiful work!
Did you put the wax over the shellac? What kind of wax - paste wax, beeswax, paraffin?

Thanks for the tip!
I find making jigs from hardwood and finishing it like furniture fascinating, although I do that myself with my workbench. For a shooting board it makes sense to increase its longevity and the finish increases the longevity of your tools too.
However, did you have to reduce your tolerances to ensure flatness when using hardwood? Did you take movement into account? Did you need to make it flatter than typical flatness because it's a shooting board?

Those are absolute works of art in themselves.

Thank you Paul. Have had a chance repairing your saw vice yet?

I consulted with one of my welding gurus and bought half a dozen cast iron welding rods on Tuesday. I now have to find time to fabricate a new part and try my hand at welding cast iron. I don't think it is going to happen straight away as I have too many other projects on the go.
