Tch, tch, Jill - never be afraid to ask! You're amongst friends here. We all knew nothing in the beginning......

Our failure to grasp a concept is often because we missed some small but vital point, or the person doing the explaining has not told us, assuming we already know it. From my own experience, I'd say the latter is perhaps the more common situation, and one I'm frequently guilty of!

One further thought - there are good instructions on this and related subjects in Charles Hayward's How to Make Woodwork Tools which is available for download in PDF from www.toolemera.com. With any luck this is a direct link: http://www.toolemera.com/bkpdf/haywardhowtobk.pdf

From a novice perspective you look at these jigs and I know what its like to think jeez "am I good enough" to build something like this, will I get the angles wrong etc.....?

Just do it! Since I built my shooting board I cant imagine not having one, as IanW said keep it simple and sharpen your planner blades, once you get the hang of it you will realise how bloody good they are.

Along with a bench hook for sawing if you have not built one....get moving and build one!
