    Default silk purse thumb plane

I showed a young woodworker friend a few plane tuneup pointers. As a thank you he gave me a thumb plane that he couldn't get to cut (gee, thanks...). It had several machining defects, on top of being a cheapo POS to begin with. I persevered, and managed to get it to work, but wound up running out of travel on the cap screw. I replaced the iron with a thicker iron, made from some random cutter I had, which looked a bit like a spade drill bit. I shortened the stem and soldered on a $1000 (old Peso) coin, domed up with a ball pein in a scooped out block of wood, to make a sort of squirrel tail. the thicker iron had the added benefit of closing up the mouth a bit.

    now it works pretty nicely.

That's interesting, but I think I would have threaded the thing and screwed on a wooden knob...but that's just me.

I thought about that, but I was too lazy to anneal, thread and reharden some unknown steel....

I do like the heft that that massive brass coin adds.

Looks like a great save and easier to use.
    Well done that man.

    Bridger,
I just bought one of those on impulse at Masters for $5. Same pattern. I stuck a timber sole on mine to make a curved bottom. I'll now use a spade bit for the iron.

The plane is in the last photo in the post. By adding the sole it moves the working throat forward . To properly address this will mean more work. I only did enough to make it work. I would like to get it to your fine standard.

    20 cent platypus.
