Default Lie-Nielsen Low Angle Smoother (#164)

Picked up the LA smoother at the Melbourne show at the LN stand. Ummed and aghhed for a while but eventually gave in. Unfortunately they didn't have one in stock, but I was able to work out a deal with the staff on the demo tool.

I took it home and finally got around to checking it tonight. After sharpening and testing I was pretty disappointed with the adjustment mechanism, so I took another look. Sure enough, being a demo tool, someone had taken it apart and put the yoke plate on the wrong way . I checked the LN site and, sure enough, the slot goes forward. Now it works like a dream. I won't do a review as Derek has already covered the subject, but I thought I'd mention the plate, it was a nuisance.

(in case anyone is wondering, the plate stays on for sharpening)

Be extremely careful Groggy, this is a very dangerous plane - it was my very first LN plane

Enjoy it because it is a nice piece of gear.

Thanks Rob. I have a couple now and enjoy each one. In fact, out of all the planes I have there are only two I am disappointed with - the LN scraper and a Sargeant #4 1/2. All the rest have their strong points. The LN LA series are sweet planes though mmm, mmm.

    I haven't got the scraper.

I bought two new planes and a high angle frog. The new frog on my No 4 works well.

I also got two Shapton ceramic stones and they work very well too.

I picked up the LN rabbet block plane, and my dear wife bought me the Veritas scraper plane.

One of the advantages of having the WWW show the week before our anniversary.

I haven't got the rabbet block plane either but I have the Veritas scraper that looks like a big spokeshave - it works OK too.

I bought one of the shaptons recently and am sold on it. I've used a variety of stones (water and oil) and think I will go with Shaptons in future if I buy any. Next priority is a good flattening stone.
