Snecked plane irons
Why?
I picked up a half dozen mixed irons for an old plow/plough plane I have. They are all snecked. Why did plane makers of old make irons in such a way?
Cheerio,

Apart from allowing plough plane blades to be adjusted back a smidge, (Only a smidgen because this actually tightens the iron against the wedge) the sneck-ing is a safety feature.
Because the plough plane iron is tapered, then the way to loosen it and the wedge is to strike the iron on the top and drive it downwards past the skate.
The snecked top is there to help clumsy operators and to prevent the iron from shooting straight through towards the floor, with tragic results for the edge.
Cheers
