Hi David. Original boxwood is back in and I did notice that the grain was roughly the same angle as the blade. The 2nd photo I put up was trying to show how straight I got the boxing, after planing the edge flat (but also fat). Hollow planes #6, #10 and #12 used to re shape curve and tip . I will have to find an alternative for boxing timber because I want to make the matching (but opposing) pair. We have plenty of hard timbers here but I guess they need to be flexible too.

my apologies! I didn't read far enough ahead to know it was already history.
As far as alternatives to boxing, I don't know of any that are perfect. Castelo boxwood looks like boxwood and wears well and is tough, but it's not as hard and won't be quite as long wearing. Some really hard rosewoods (like kingwood) would probably work well, but they may also be a bit more chippy.
Larry Williams uses persimmon, but I think it looks funny because the color isn't quite right. It's durable, though (golf club heads in the past - good toughness, and resistant to wear...and can be tough to plane, too).
