I'm getting the Bintang logo on Jamaican flag coloured wallets.

...I'll just make the other bits smaller.

I have not got any. But I am considering buying some, the "sock specifications" state that it would help keep the rust off?

    Thank you and regards,

Well each of my feet has a sole, a heel, and at least one toe....and I usually keep them in socks

Then again, before I put them in shoes I make sure there are no frogs inside....

    Cheers, Vann.

ps. I don't know what my socks are impregnated with, but there are no rust marks on my feet... (censored)

hah - I was going to say that it was cold.

And as a comment on Peter's original post ...

I read that and thought "that post could have been mine!" I was going to feel outraged then I thought, "why?"
in any event if it was my post I was merely trying to be helpful and point out that these things existed not that I endorsed them or might even have a set. (and in hindsight I think my comment might have been about chisel protectors but if the sock fits )

No ... only in America ...

Google the quote ("it is a bit of a pain to always look for cardboard and tape to wrap the blade so as to avoid mishaps.
Does anyone have a better idea? ")

BTW ... I don't think I've ever seen a post on these forums that I have thought "Stupid ... that doesn't need to be here."
... sure, except for a couple that I then realised I had written myself ...

People are all the time remarking that it's "nicer" here than some fora, so please get onboard with it. Play the ball, not the man.

In summary then - we've had a post about something being ridiculous - shot the sh.t back and forth about what people think - and come to the stunning conclusion that it's stupid to some people and kinda handy to others.

    That's what we do here.

    Buyer beware.

    Cheers,
    Paul

    Doggie,
When it's used in forums, the term "plane sock" is sometimes used in a derogatory way.

    I think often it's just a bait.

There is a long tradition of using a green baize drawstring pouch for a plane....and the couple of times when I find one in a tool chest, my heart starts to beat more quickly.
I saw a tool chest a few days ago, had a beautiful, pristine Spiers Smoother in the bottom of the box which had stayed that way for 100 years because of a "sock"

    From last year...
    The Oxley Tool Chest
Here with a couple of mates, and luckily, we had a camera.

Here is another plane found in a sock..a skew mouth plane by T.J. Gardner, Narrow wine Street, Bristol.

These are VERY similar to a marble bag my mum used to make for us when we were kids . Can't imagine buying a marble bag...

Perhaps I'm lucky to have had people around me who made things since the day I was born. So the idea of buying marble bags, work aprons, kids toys...and tons of other things that folk want to sell me, just makes me shake my head. Especially when.. on the one hand we are so intent on searching for clues, and evidence about how things were made in the past, so we can revive and enjoy the handmade culture...and on the other being the promoters, and purchasers of pop products.

    Regards,
    Peter

I put some metal planes in old socks (usually the ones that see little use), seems to keep the rust away. and my wife made me satin socks for 2 wooden block planes I made. Now for files and rasps - newspaper seems to be the best protector (NEVER use leather#, especially if you have no idea where it has been - unlike my old socks. I once used a old pilots case to store some files - sh*t, I could not believe how quickly the files (even though wrapped in paper, in boxes) went rusty.

Long walking socks cover larger planes by the way.

    Cheers
    Peter

I just use the cheapest manufacturing skins with the wool still on - they are similar to the interior skins of moccasins

Not much tanning being done in Oz these days because of the epa and the amount of salt used in preserving the skins - who needs that dumped in the rivers

I double them over and roll them up and stand them end up in post tubes etc

Is it the residual lanolin in the skins or not laying the metal on the bare leather side - I dont know - but I do unroll and check until I am sure of a skin

    Neil
