Thread: Spear & Jackson saw(s)

I am just starting to create the replacement handle (Thanks Lightwood!) with a nice piece of Bubinga. I'll have to track down the green part of the S&J medallion and another couple of split nuts for this saw.

I found a suitable replacement handle with authentic hardware in Canada for $14 on eBay, but the fellow wants $46 in postage - and that was 8 weeks delivery time by surface mail. I had a rare outbreak of sanity and declined.

Might be able to help you again.
I do have a red surround for a S&J saw medallion also, no green ones....would that suite?
I can get it out for a pic if you like.





also found I had a pile of them....
Moved house a while ago, I tossed out over 20 saws...couldn't bring myself to toss all the nuts though.

this is the disk...the screw and nut are lightly nickel plated. That might help date it.
Is this the same wording as the green ones?

I believe the same wording. Somewhere I have seen a short pamphlet, and at the end is a quick ad for S&J saws ... it mentions green, red, purple and gold I think.

I was assuming it was a pdf that I had ... but can't find anything like that.

I think it was this pamphlet/book ... "CONCERNING HANDSAWS: SOME HINTS ON THEIR CARE & MAINTENANCE. Spear & Jackson: The World's Greatest Sawmakers. Aetna Works, Sheffield. c1950"

I can't be sure. I've never seen the original green one up close that this saw is missing.

Actually ... "three leg handsaws" ...

I think that is from a Tyzack saw.

I love Tyzack saws. I've got about 6 of them so far. I've grabbed a picture of the ones I've put back together again after cleaning them up. They have all arrived in fairly sorry condition and needed some care. All finished using Canuba wax and (in some cases) Danish Oil:

I understand PC's reference to the three legs and Tyzack, but never seen that red plate on a Tyzack saw before. Not that I know all their saws by a long shot.

I only saw it last year, but I'd say from say 1900-1930ish at least (at a guess), Tyzack had carbon copies of the S&J offerings.
I guess like in the US where you could have a D8-looking saw from a half-dozen and more saw makers.

I took some photos yesterday of a couple S&J medallions ... off two very sorry-looking saws

Some of Disston's #7 saws had a paper 'boaster'(???) like this around the 1900 mark ... and so Atkins, and Woodrough & McParlin, ... no doubt others, had saws with it too.
