It looks like you have a good answer, but if still in doubt try wiping a reasonably powerful magnet over the handle & you should feel a little bit of pull if there's any steel in there unless they used a non-ferrous metal like brass. I'd think it unlikely they used metal for a few reasons, one being cost, another extra weight...

    Cheers,

Here is another which followed me home.
It is a guess on my part but I assume it pre-dates the 1961 catalogue.
One for you Paul - perhaps you will be able to date it.
Doesn't look like it has seen much - if any - use
    It is 6 points

Nice looking etch. Saw has been well preserved but still lost a nut!

    Tom

    This is from 1939:

    Spear and Jackson No.88P 1939 catalogue.jpg

I have no access ta any catalogues between 1939 and 1960 so I can't narrow it down any further. The 88P with the non break handle had it engraved into the handle like your saw, which looks very tidy incidentally. A 1930 catalogue has "Spearior" carved into the handle where yours says "non-break." My reading of the information is that the doweled handle was introduced in or about 1939.

    Regards
    Paul

    Thanks Paul.
Older than I had thought. My dad was 17 in 1939
    Kind regards

This lovely saw cleaned up quickly, and it looks a treat. Not bad for an eighty year old saw.

The only replacement handle hardware that I had is steel, not brass - but it will serve.

I sincerely believe that this saw has done next to no work, and seems to have its original sharpen and set.
