Lost yer specs Matt? Or are you trying to make it out on one of them silly little phone screens??

I can read what's on it quite clearly (with my specs on) if I blow the pic up a bit: 20200725_104034 c.jpg

Why do you say not Beech, MA? Looks like Beech grain to me, with a very heavy stain applied to it, methinks. I have never seen a S&J handle that was stained, just heavily varnished, so maybe this happened after it left the factory?

Great to see these old workhorses being rescued & given another go at life...

Thanks all. Ian I had another look this morning and I think it is Beech too. The medullary rays are more obvious where ones palm sits. According to the catalogues Paul has previously published it should be. I only cleaned it up with metho and put on my BLO based finish. I can still get a close up if you need Matt! Thanks CK I'm happy with it. The shiny brass always helps. Nick yes but this was a combination of S&J and the Superior saw company. Almost a dad joke! If Paul sees this he will explain better.

Looks like I have the little brother. 22 inch crosscut at 10 tpi. Nice little saws, these.

Hi Fergi. Nice saw. In the little bit of research I have done online I have seen a few versions like mine (with the word "Spearior" surrounded by a dark background) but with the same medallion as yours - the extra large washer surrounding the standard size medallion. Your etching is in nice condition too, a bit of saw bling.

Your S & J 88A is a good acquisition. The clues to dating this saw are the "Spearior" logo and the washer surrounding the medallion. I am not exactly sure when Spearior first appeared. It was not there in a 1923 catalogue,but does appear in a 1928 edition.

By the 60s the No.88 had completely disappeared along with any semblance of style .

Your model looks to be later than MA's according to the above. However, I can't be definitive on either saw as I don't have enough information. It is not "my area." It's a shame Pittwater Pete is not around these days as he was a specialist S & J collector and may have more information.

Oh man, why do I keep looking at these threads? Seeing this I suddenly had this itch to restore another saw or tool and as I was looking for material at a demolition yard he had also a few saws. So I couldn't resist and picked some up...

It's just soo satisfying when I revive a rusty bit of junk to something nice again. It's hard not to do it......I'm too weak ;-)

Doesn't even have to be old, I'm going to be restoring (fixing) a brand new spear and jackson tenon saw pretty soon - following the Rex Krueger instructions.

Hi Paul, CK and James. Paul my saw looks a lot like the 20's and 30's versions apart from the washer. CK I know exactly what you mean. James I have seen the video too.
