Default Spirit level and damage by vibration

I need to joint the edges of some timber and was thinking of using a flush trim bit in a router with a spirit level clamped to the underside of the timber as a guide for the bearing. But then I had a thought that whatever vibration comes out of the router as it is cutting would transfer into the spirit level possibly damaging it. It's a good Stabila level and obviously I don't want to kill it.

It was just a thought to save me buying an otherwise un-needed large sheet of MDF for a straight edge or trusting that my dodgy router table and fence will hold at 90deg.

    Buy another spirit level....

...or buy another sheet of MDF and keep it aside to use as a straight edge. You could even cut bits of it up and make things with it.

Or, if you're going to do this sort of thing on a regular basis now is the time to buy a good straight edge. I'm sure one doesn't buy a router with flush cutting bits for a one off job, so you should invest in more tools to complement it and make your kit a more functional one.

    Cheers,
    Virg.

I would have a look at the second hand timber yards and you will be very supprised at what you will find their to do the job and at little cost.

I was a bricky for about 15 years. we used our levels as crowbars to plumb window frames, we did all sorts of abuse to them and never managed to damage one. The worst that happened to them was when they got covered in mortar so that you could not read them.. You had to scrap the glass/plastic with a trowel then. I shouldn't think the vibration from a router would worry them. A Stabilla has adjustments anyway.
    I am learning, slowley.

Have you thought of getting a good aluminum straitedge, you can get various profile tubes that are very strong and light, best I think to go for a rectangle profile.
    Good luck

    Nrd: I've done exactly that

After work on Friday I whipped into my favourite scrap metal yard and picked up 2.5m of small rectangular ally for $5. It'll probably get rebated into a length of hardwood so it sticks out just a tad and give a wider base to clamp pieces on to.
