    Default New Spokeshave Home

A dust & hopefully rust free home for the spokeshaves I use the most.

500mm X 320mm X 96mm. Old growth Red Cedar from the Bank of NSW in Queen St Brisbane, Silver Ash & an American timber that was given to me... no idea what the name is
The door is held shut with very strong rear earth magnets (N52), one in the top of the door & one set in the top of the carcase, inserted from the top.

Finished in 30% gloss lacquer & hand rubbed wax.

    Thanks for looking
    Cheers

Very nice Major. That old red cedar looks great doesn't it? How about a little turned dark knob instead of the handle?

I could turn a little knob, one off's I can do, if I had a lathe but I'll leave it for the pen turners

    very very nice cabinet

one would think it was mounted in your bathroom

BUT of greater interest, at least to me ..
how does the Kunz compare to the Record, Stanley and Veritas?
apart from teh soles, which I can't see, they appear to be very similar
    regards from Alberta, Canada

The Knuz has an adjustable mouth & is only good in certain situations & it's a bitch to do fine blade adjustments. I wish I could get hold of a Stanley #53 or #54 of which the Kunz is a copy (poor)

The flat sole Veritas is just a pleasure to use & I will upgrade the Record 151R curved sole to the Veritas curved sole version in the future.

The Stanley 151 flat sole belonged to my grand father & I've fettled it to produce a great finish, it's good but still not in the Veritas league.
    Cheers

Have you tried the small LN bronze shaves which are copies of the Prestons?
I've got the flat sole version and the flat sole Veritas and find the LN a nicer tool.

I hate people nit picking on fine work but, . . . . . I wonder if it is just me or does the LHS bracket look a little crooked?

    Whatever, serious good work

Major, I have my dad's 151, which also has to stay in my toolbox. The blade was pretty well gone, so I put a Lee Valley replacement blade in it. Though still not capable of quite as fine work as my Veritas, the thicker blade does make a huge difference. You've probably already done this as a part of your fettling, but if not, it's well worth fitting a thicker cutter.

Nice cabinet - I presume the supports are glued on to the back strips & not sawn from a single piece?

I still marvel at how dust-free that shed of yours is..............!!

    Cheers,

The LHS support stem is dead square & straight. It could be the angle of the photo.
