    Default My spokeshave won't shave!

    Hello everybody,
I have recently tried to sharpen my spokeshave iron. The trouble was I couldn't use my honeing guild as its too useless to fit such a short blade so I did it by eye.
As my eyesight is fairly shot the results were, how would you say.....
    ORDINARY.
The back is a bit pitted as well.

1.If I grind it down does it mean that the blade will not sit tight against the plane body and chatter?
2.Can anyone tell me how to hone it up without buying a veritas mk11 or similar.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hey.

I now have the Vertias short blade guide, but in the past I've just sharpened those short blades using a small rectangular block of wood (approx. 4" x 2" x 3/4") with a slot cut the end to receive the blade. Basically, you end up with a longer 'blade' which gives you more control over sharpening.

    Cheers,

Bleedin, I sharpened my spokie blade by bolting it to a light steel bracket which was about 2" wide by 6" long, then clamping the bracket in the honing guide. This gave me a long "blade" around the size of a plane iron & made it easy to fit the guide. Worked great.

(The bracket was actually part of a metal BBQ trolley, it was meant to bolt to the end of the trolley to hang the gas bottle.)

If the back is pitted you will need to flatten it so the edge is the meeting of two smooth faces. If the pitting is so bad you can't get it all out as a last resort you may be able to put a very small back bevel on the reverse of the blade. It will have the effect though of increasing the cutting angle of the shave.

    Cheers.......................Sean
