Colen's squares can't be beat, IMO. Being able to easily adjust them is a boon. His service is spot on, too, & in the rare event you do have a problem, he will attend to it without quibbles. Not the cheapest tools around, but amortised over your (& your heirs) lifetimes, a pretty good deal.

Cheap & nasty squares aren't always bad, you just don't know how square they are. I picked up an engineers square from Carbi-tec & took that into bunnys with me & checked out all their squares till found 1 that really was square. I use my engineers square now as a reference for all other tools.

At the lower-priced end of the scale, I can highly recommend Shinwa squares from toolsfromjapan: Shinwa 'Mighty' square. : Tools from Japan, Japanese woodworking tools direct from Japan.

I find them to be nicely made, well finished and accurate. IMO they're far better than the price would suggest.

Well that proved to be an expensive question.
I'd love a Colen Clenton square but basic financial reality kicked in and I have taken everyones advice and bought a Starrett combination square from Ebay for $9O odd.
