Default Stanley 113 and Union 411 Blades?

Does anyone here happen to know if the compass plane blades are interchangeable?

    Thanks,

    Craig

From a quick search both are reported to be the same width at 1 3/4 which is the same size as a Stanley 3 blade. You can even buy IBC or hock 1 3/4 blades. Patricks blood and gore identifies that cap irons for the Stanley 113 are peculiar to the 113 only . This thread says that were two types where the 3 will fit the newer type ( the sidewheel type 113 is the older one; bailey type with brass adjuster)

What would be good to know ( and what i think you are asking) is the location of the rectangle on the cap iron where the y adjusting lever locates in the cap iron. Perhaps users / owners of both newer 113's and 411 planes could measure the distance for you?

Most sites called them clones of each other.

    Default Differences

    Pac Man,

Thanks for the dtailed and thoughtful response.

Looking at the blades of both, it seems the 113 has the larger part of the hole at the bottom of the blade, while the 411 has it at the top, but both blades are the same size.

I know that I can replace the 113's blade with a Hock blade and blade cap (according to Fine Woodworking, at least), and am hoping I can do the same with the 411.

If i have this right the larger round hole where the cap screw passes thru to secure the cap iron is closer to the end of the blade that gets sharpened and the other has it at the opposite end? It shouldnt matter as the critical factors are where the cap iron rectangular hole ends up to advance the blade with the Y; where the cap screw is positioned (how far up or down the blade) when it is tight as you may have to move to accommodate the 411 or 113 frog placement if the frogs are in slightly different positions ( remembering the frog cradles the cap screw when the blade is in the plane) but thinking on this it would be unlikely.

It sounds as though you have both planes. Have you tried swapping them one to the other? If so what were your findings? Also do you have access to a stanley bailey 3 for fun to see if it fits as well?

Default Hock Blades and Chip Breakers for Compass Planes

I'd love to own both, but my pockets seldom provide the means to achieve all of my woodworking wants.

I have a Union 411 coming shortly (thanks to a WA-based eBay legend) and only ever seen the Stanley 113s in books and online. I am just trying to be ready to put it to good use once it arrives.

From the sounds of what you have told me, and from the scant info I can find online, I gather that the Ron Hock combo mentioned in Fine Woodworking will work just fine.

I've just ordered a new #3 blade and the improved chip breaker (BK113 for $30.00 US) from Hock blades and will post results here when they arrive and how the fitting goes.

    Default Confirmed!

Well, the Hock blade and chip breaker fit perfectly on the Union 411, so I am one happy camper. I'll put the plane to use shortly and post a couple of pictures. finding information on using this style of plane isn't as easy as I thought it would be. Barrett Hack's book has some info, as does Aaln and Gill Bridgewater's Mastering Hand Tool Techniques. The best I have found so far is the article from a recent Fine Woodworking magazine issue.

Anyone else here know of some good references for using these planes?

    Thanks,

    Craig
