Unfortunately one of the stipulations for the assignment is that we have to be able to go hands on with the objects as well as photograph them.. It would be possible to fudge it but I like to stay true to the spirit of the task as well..

however if anyone would like to donate said items delivered to my door in the next half hour I would not complain I chose these items because they were at hand and there are enough people doing clocks, kettles, phones, door knobs etc that I thought it would be nice to do something different. I've invested too much time now to move onto something else so hopefully have garnered enough to make a reasonable attempt.

I guess moral of the story is don't try to find new rental accomodation when assignment due dates are starting to loom so in amongst the packing and moving I hope to get this and two other assignments in at at least pass level.

Thanks again for your time, help and tips

    Andrew

    I appreciate your predicement, Andrew

However, don't loose sight of your task -- describing/discussing the evolution of the HAND tool used to make moldings or grooves. Whilst similar in appearance, they are different tools
If you continue with your proposed
... moving on to the 13-050 and then the router which often does the job (don't have access to a spindle moulder which may have been a bit truer the task)
just remember that you will be discussing changes to the tooling used to produce the groove or molding, rather than a particular type of tool

to return to door knobs, comparing a router or shaper with a HAND plane would be a bit like comparing door knobs with automatic doors

Also, moulding moulding planes date from the 1700s or earlier, not the 1880s.
By the time the Miller patent plough was patented around 1876, metal plough planes had been in production for some years

    Hi Again Ian

The wooden moulding plane I have at hand has been dated as being from the late 1800's. that date may not be accurate but as that is the date given that is the date I am using.

I appreciate your thoughts about tools/doorknobs but this is also about the technological/societal changes that have also come about so your comment about comparing doorknobs to sliding doors could actually be argued as valid for this assignment. In my way of thinking it is the method used to produce said moulding, the tool is a vehicle to look at that as well as the changes/advances that have made these things possible.. I may be well and truly off the beaten track here but am willing to continue the way I am going..

Once I am finished with Uni and on a slalary I might even be able to afford some of those tools or some nice handmade planes (who knows might try making some myself) then I will look back at this and cringe but till then I'd better put fingers to keyboard and get this paper written..

    cheers

    Andrew

    Hi Ian.

It's not going to be that good.. I have only bits and pieces of info to go on. No new information other than what's already here and a couple of comments about the processes involved and how these examples could be used in a classroom setting either as the focus or helping a different learning outcome. Essays really are not my thing at the best of times and this one isn't shaping up to be one of the better ones so at this point not really in the mood for sharing.

I tried asking stanley UK for some info via email but as of yet no reply. If I ever get anything from them I would be happy to post if it is considered general information.

Damien from woodlooking didn't have any more info than he had already posted, Patrick Leach (blood and gore" as suspected didn't have info on english made stanleys hiding away anywhere at this point in time.

    cheers

    Andrew
