    Hi all and season's greetings

    I've been out of action for a few days recovering from minor surgery, so only got back to this on Christmas eve.

    A bit more de-rusting and judicious use of a heat gun, and the pieces separated.
    The steel inside the nuts is pristine but heavily corroded just below the join line.

    Some filing cleaned the studs up enough to be salvageable.

    All the parts have been cleaned up and polished, the timbers refinished, and the iron re-ground and sharpened.

    All back together and taking good shavings.

    Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions and to IanW for your very generous offer to make up a new set of studs.
    I learned a lot doing this.

    Now on to the 5 1/2 and then I'm going to chance my arm refurbishing a few handsaws.

    Dougall, there looks to be plenty of good thread there, so the studs should be fine - I've seen far more corroded examples still hanging on.

    The corrosion is probably due to galvanic action as has been suggested, it has affected only the steel & not the brass, which is as it should be. Begs the question of how moisture got to sit in the tops of knob & tote long enough for such a severe case of corrosion to occur?! The rest of the plane seems to be in relatively good condition, it doesn't look like it's been left out in the rain repeatedly...
