Stanley #55
I went and met my girlfriends grandparents today, and when her grandad found out i was a carpenter, he HAD to show me his workshop in his shed.
one of my first questions was about his hand planes, he showed me his old stanley ones, but then went to the back of the shelf, and pulled out a box full of stuff.
He then continued to tell me, it was a stanley #55 hand plane which was very old.
he told me that its called #55 because it has 55 different shaping blades.
Then he unrolled 2 leather rolls, and showed me that he still had ALL the blades, 90% of which are still un used and still in the paper package! Which i thought was amazing!
So, can anyone tell me more info about these planes, or does anyone still even use them?

They are not the easiest thing in the world to use. Set up is fussy if you are using both fences. If you are not using both fences. you might as well use a 45.
I have a few of the beasts. The name of the plane has nothing to do with the number of cutters. The first ones had 52 and that was increased to 55 later.

55's are great things to look at especially if in the condition you described, but to add to Bobs post above.
Forget about using a Combination Plane if you're Left handed as i am an it took me quite a whole to realise why I couldn't get the ---- thing to work Right Handed

You may find it beneficial to search for threads started by apricotripper as he travelled a long way down the combination plane path.

Another good resource on the subject of the #55 and other combination planes (which, like apricotripper's threads, is from someone who likes to use and actually does use combination planes) is Cornish Woodworker.

Is it true that Rubik couldn't manage a 55 and so designed the cube?
Cheers,
