    Default Stanley #6 Frog

    G'day Woodworkers,

This is my first post to the Woodwork Forum. Hello everyone. I didn't realise there was an active buy/sell/swap section in the Forum - a great idea. I've been using eBay for bits and pieces but in future will look here first.

    Any way to the topic:

I have (what I believe to be) a #6 Stanley plane. I believe it is an older model as the cap iron hole is not kidney shaped and it belonged to my grandfather and possibly his father (they were cabinet makers in the UK and Canada). The name Stanley does not appear on it but it has two S's (casting marks) on the base, either side and forward of the tote, just under the brass wheel. It has "No 6" on the front. It has a cracked frog (that has been repaired) and is missing the lateral adjuster. The front base of the frog is continuous with the mouth and without the little central cut-out piece common to more recent Stanleys. I have posted a picture for you to see.

I wonder if anybody has a spare undamaged frog that I could buy to suit this #6 plane? I have tried The Tool Exchange and searched on the net but so far without luck. Hopefully, some one will have one.

    Regards,

    Paul

I have a complete 4 1/2 that you are welcome to for $30, you will need to come and have a look at the frog mounting points though as I believe they changed over time. Also a record 4 1/2 parts plane that you could try the frog from. I am in Kalamunda if you care to come for a drive tomorrow. PM me if interested.

    regards,
    Mike

No Frog on mine very different. The record one I have is very similar and may fit, welcome to try it if you want.

The whole 4 1/2 was going on a trip to NCArchers but I just dropped it and cracked the side of the sole

    Exclamation Re #6 frog

Hi, The plane may be a pre-lateral. If it is it never had a lateral lever. Are there file or grind marks on the top of the frog or is it as cast ? If it is a pre-lat I doubt if a later frog will fit. I may have an early frog in my bits which I will be sorting to take to the TTTG sale & swap on Sunday. If I find any thing will ping you.

    Default Stanley #6 Frog

Burnsy suggested a #4 1/2 frog may fit my #6 and Stuart of the Tool Exchange had a frog listed as a part for a #4 1/2. I have fitted this #4 1/2 frog and have produced some shavings in between burning the dinner.

The damaged frog has the recess and the pin hole for the lateral adjuster. The plane isn't pre-lateral adjuster.

Wish I was in Sydney to look over all the tools. Thanks for your offer.

    Regards,

    Paul

    Hi Paul,
Are you still looking for a frog for your number 6.
I was down in my shed today and had recourse to visit the boneyard, and lo and behold I have found an undamaged frog that will suit if you still want it.
It is complete with lateral adjustment lever and small brass adjuster knob.
Let me know if you need it.
    Regards from Tele Point

Yes, I have managed to track down a replacement frog. Thank you. Stuart from the Tool Exchange had a #4 1/2 frog of that vintage that fits the #6.

    Regards,

    Paul

Hi SG, you don't happen to have a spare 4 1/2 base in the bone yard do you. The one I have has a small crack in the corner of the mouth. It's not a problem at the moment but if I get stuck into some serious hardwood it might open up and cause the blade to chatter (I'm guessing here).

    Your lucky day NC
I've got one and you can have it.
It's an early one with the older frog from about 1900.
Let me have your address and I'll get it off to you.
    Regards
    Tom
