Thumbs up Stanley 6 - the saga continues

Every time i walked past the dud six I thought b ugger!
So today I cleaned 'er up some more. Put the backing plate, blade and cap into the soup (separately) with the now very thin stainless steel bolt.

Put the backing plate and blade across 180,240 and 320 diamonds and 800 wet and dry.
Lapped the blade and got it to shave my arm (gotta explain a 2" bald patch to the missus).

I'd already rubbed the handle and knob back to timber (white beech by the look of it) so i put 6 coats of shellac on and gave it a light rub with 0000 steel wool.

I have absolutely no idea how to adjust/set the blade or whatever the adjustment process is called. Anyway i put the backing plate on the blade (after running the 320 diamond over the flush edge of the backing plate) so that there was about 1/32nd" of the blade showing. Looked pretty flash all put together so I thought what the hell I'll see if I can get it to cut one of those s exy thin curly shavings. So I ran it along the edge of 900mm x 12mm Tas Oak. Got a 900mm thin curly shaving.

Pity about the base. Can't wait to get a good'un. Learnt a lot so far even though the plane is stuffed. Gotta say the feeling I had when I got the longggg thin shaving was pretty good. The weight of the plane and how it wanted to keep going was real dark side stuff I guess.

You must have been seroiusly testing that blade for sharpness!

From your reaction to the thrill of planing and the thread about "better than sex" it sounds like I might have to get myself a jointing plane

Me of little faith (more like the feeling has passed, they are now back to being another handy set of tools, part of the overall journey, but not a destination within themselves) has had that on a clip on a hook in the shed for a many moons now, right next to the handplane shelves

I sympathise with you fully. I mean, just looking at things like that stabs at your heart sometimes....

But ....it could be a lot, lot worse, in my opinion.

Look at this piece of crap I trued up recently. Cracks everywhere. YET, it works beautifully.

I don't understand really how bad the crack in your plane is. I'd have to see it in person. ...but, I suppose the question is, does the crack widen under pressure ?....only then, I'd be concerned. ie. When, you press on the planes side hard, does the crack seem to move about?

But like I said before. I can see how it hurts everytime you look at it. I've got a few ****ups sitting around on shelves that have me cursing to myself everytime I see them.
