Stanley #7
I am looking to purchase a Stanley #7 or similar (see thread in 'Wanted') and would appreciate comment from forum plane experts regarding the wisdom or otherwise of me bidding on this plane that comes up on eBay later today.
Stanley No 7 Jointer, Sweetheart blade | eBay
I have very limited knowledge or experience of hand planes and there purchase second hand and would appreciate some guidance on this.
ThanksHitch

Not a lot of blade left.......heavy pitting on sides though the sole looks passable and (this bit I'm not at all sure of) that frog doesn't look original. Note, I'm not running down the seller, it is what it is and they haven't tried to duck and dive around the truth. I fact, full marks for their description of the blade.
I found two #7s after a quick search on ebay and of the two, I'd pick this one as the blade should be worth something at the least.

In ebay speak the seller bought a better old one and needs to sell this one. This means i am not happy with it even though i spent a lot of time on it. I got the other one to work better and dont need this one hanging around. As per seanz, the blade is too short and the frog may or may not be the correct one.
You may be better off buying closer to you as the postage will be $22 ish

I have a no 7 and I love it. It is big and heavy-really well built. The one I have is in very good condition but I have restored some old planes that started off looking a bit grim and they work nicely. There is a chap called Stuart at
http://www.toolexchange.com.au/Stanley- Parts.html
who has all sorts of parts and planes. I have had some dealings with him and he seems good value. If you can get the plane at the right price and if it needs a new blade or a other bits he will most likely have what you need. If you want a jointer and you don't want to buy a Veritas or LN then doing up an old Stanley is a good option I think. My age is still less than my number of posts

Hey Paul, that bottle opener, handy as it is, is a bit of a giveaway.

The photo is off another forum (not my plane or bottle opener) and was sad to see the old girl like that. I have had one 7 crack in transit on one side but was swiftly replaced by the seller.
Once i got a stanley 6 that was in a auspost box as i asked the seller to please send in a box. Only packing was a plastic shopping bag. Similar result.
Mostly i have had good results from people who care about what they are selling and how they pack it.
My motto if you are selling is pack as you would like to receive (and buyer beware, check feedback etc)

The Tool Exchange is a company in Queensland. They have a web site which has the address I gave. The web site lists a myriad of old tools for sale. But not just the tools but parts for tools. Suppose you find a no 71 router plane but it is missing a cutter. Chances are you can find one on the tool exchange. You pay your money and within a few days the part you need is posted to you. I just did exactly this. The parts are nearly all old and in need of some restoration but that is the way of things with old tools. Very handy if you are getting old tools from auctions or flea markets. Many of these tools are good value but often have missing bits. The Tool Exchange is a good place to check. I checked the site just now and they are listing a number of parts for the no 7.

Did Not Bid
Thanks to everyone for your responses and interest. I decided not to bid on this and note it sold for $82 with four bidding.
From yesterdays research and learning I have identified some other options to follow up on.
Thanks againHitch
