Stanley high angle smoother
Boy this has come up a 'few' times before but it's worth annoying people again I think. My oregon workbench needed a bit of a resurface and when it was first done I had lots of problems with tearout, which I solved with my drum sander. This time it can't go through the sander so what to do? I used my #6 with a Paul Williams 3mm blade and turned it around so bevel up. This is nothing new. One of the problems is that the cap iron may no longer bear on the blade so there is a gap that will jam shavings. Alternatively, if the cap iron is mounted above the bevel, the blade may project too far and cannot be retracted to a useable level.
So I pulled the cap iron out of my #3 and fitted it just on the top of the bevel. That gave me functioning depth and lateral adjustment and by winding the frog full forward I got a small mouth. It's (the cap iron) just a bit narrow but didn't seem to affect performance at all, which was modest, difficult pushing but got the job done.
Cheers
Michael
