Stanley Bailey Market Find
Hi all
I went down to our local Sunday market today and picked up this plane for $20 and the drill brace for $5. I have been looking on the net to find out how old this plane is and was $20 a good buy, it is a number 5 1/4 with Stanley on the lever cap and Bailey on the front, also has a code APR-19-10 between the Frog and rear handle.
It needs a bit of a clean up as it has paint splatters and varnish or glue on it which seems to come off pretty easy.
If anyone has any idea of the age it would be a real help.
Thanks

Stanley Plane type study
Seems to be a type 13.....and for $20, you would seem to be a jammy bar$tard.
Enjoy.

I have just noticed that it hasnt got the sweetheart logo on the blade as it seems type 13 planes have but it says Erik Anton Berg Eskilgtuna Sweden, looks like the blade it not original.

It's got a Berg blade as well? You're just rubbing it in now, aren't you?
#5 and a 1/4s are supposed to be the same width as a #3 so if you want a 'user' rather than a collectors piece you should have no problem sourcing a decent replacement blade and chip-breaker......judging from the pics they may be a little too far gone. But you never know until you've got the rust off.We don't know how lucky we are......

Ok now you are just rubbing it in.
Tell your children and your grandchildren about it, tell your wife or partner, tell anyone else who'll listen. Celebrate and enjoy as it is the start down the slippery slope. (and the best find)
Myself I live in hope of finding a 5 dollar bedrock. I am not choosy any model would do.
Incidentally if you would like to sell it. Please let me know. I'll offer you say $25.

Looks like there's still a fair bit of blade left. Don't be too upset about the previous sharpening efforts. With planes in that sort of condition (and some that are a lot tidier) there is often pitting on the cutting surface just South of the cap iron/chip-breaker. It should only be 2 to 4 mm so I often get rid of that bit to get to the good metal.
Just one of those things, the rest of the blade can be nice and shiny but the part that's been in contact with the timber has has all of the oil from the oilstone wiped off and had a light layer of acetic acid left on it.
Have fun. Welcome to vintage handtools.

I reckon it's a type #14 (raised ring below front knob) USA made during 1929 & 30. In my opinion the best type (along with type #15), but others may disagree. From type #16 the quality was on a downhill slide - although I believe they didn't get too bad until well into the 1960s...
Great find, at a great price. Well done that man
Go carefully with any work you do on it. If you want to file open the mouth to take a thicker cutter, sell it for good money, and buy an old No.5 to file instead.
My tuppence worth.
