Stanley behaving badly
Hiya,
My new old Stanley no 50 seems to be misbehaving. I can't seem to tighten the blade enough to stop it being pulled down deeper into the cut. It seems to me that the blade is only held in position by side clamping force, not with a mechanical lock like the no 45 has.
So the magically extending blade is probably an unplanned design feature. Or am I missing something?
Cheers

Hi Mono,
May well be a design feature of yours. May pay to try and check how well everything seats when clamped, and you may well need to take a file to it to help it seat and clamp better.
I have a Stanley #50 - a nice shiny English made one, it only has blade clamping issues for the one or two narrowest cutters, just cant do up the wing nut tight enough. When you take a cut the force of the blade against the wood pushes it back and it stops cutting. Not sure why yours would be drawn out as the force should be against it.

A way to 'see' the pressure
Machinist's dye is handy for seeing how parts meet.
Gumbacher, or any fine artist's oil paint works well too. Lightly smear it on one part, assemble the tool and see how it transfers to the interface.
This is similar to when a Dentist slips carbon-like paper between your new filling and the interface of the meeting tooth.
The more transfer, the less chattering.
Good luckI'm both dyslexic and paranoid. I keep thinking I'm following someone.
