    Default Rust hunt got lucky

    Hello all,
As usual I cant pass up on old tools. I got a spear and jackson saw on ebay and when I went to pick it up I just asked if there were any other old woodworking tools looking for a new home. They dragged out a box of bits and pieces and let me rummage. I did a deal and came home with this lot. I have cleaned up the S&J, sharpened it and it cuts great. The Diston rip will need a new handle but is otherwise a good saw. I sharpened the 2 coffin smoothers and they work ok but both are just a bit wide in the mouth. They take a reasonable shaving but I will put in hardwood inserts at a later date. The light one is a J.Jowett of Sheffield and the dark one is a Mathesson. The drawknife is a Tyzack and the brace is anybodies guess.
    Regards

Well done. I hope you explained that the tools were going to a good home?

    the brace is anybodies guess
Let me have the first guess then.....it looks just like a P&B (made in England) I have in the shed. A good brace.

Also pleased to see that your test pieces of timber for the planes do double duty for the auger drill bits.
We don't know how lucky we are......

    seanz,
Thanks for the tip on the brace. It does look good and solid. I have a stanley I bought in the 70s but the ratchet collar is plastic so I thought this looks more workman like. I still find the odd job for a brace especially as a heavy duty screwdriver. More torque than a power drill and more control too so you dont strip the screw heads. My other cordless!
The holes in the wood scrap were rounds I cut out to make cams for the hold down on a saw sled.
    Regards
    John
