I have had a set of the yellow handled Stanley chisels for about 5 years. They get sharpened on an oil stone till they shave the hairs (and skin) off my arm. I reckon thay are good value.
My age is still less than my number of posts

Its not the Blue Chip ones but its the "Split Proof" ones. They are the one with the red and yellow handles. They are the best ive used.

If still looking for chisels try the local trash and treasure. I bought ..

    x1 titan 3/4 inch chisel $4
x1 Sheffield steel dovetail chisel $4

The above are wayyyy better than anything you can buy today. The dovetail chisel even came with brass sleeve, polished up nicely

With regards to the Marples, the father in law has an old set of the the splitproof handled ones (red and yellow). They hold an AMAZING edge. Dont know what the new ones are like though...

Oh yeah and the buy of the day was a disston crosscut saw, midly damaged handle but very useable, for the ridiculous price of $1

Never going into a woodshop again after THAT!

The guy who built our patio used a 12mm old Titan chisel to snap the heads off the bolts of our old patio. I dont think he had much need for paring endgrain pine.

I think, the Titan chisels are a pot'o'gold in this country. Every bloke seemed to have one in previous generations and theres some to be found at every garage sale. The few that I've bought hold a much better edge than the red&yellow handled marples I've got.

The patina'd old wooden handles add to the charm too.
    Cheers,

    Adam
