Stanley Fatmax chisels
My local sunday market offers new Stanley Fatmax/through tang chisels for $20 each. Are these likely to be genuine? They certainly look as if they are, with Stanley packaging, and Sheffield on the blade.

I've seen some fake FatMax chisels at markets and they were easy to spot; the blades were about 30mm too short

Here's the real thing, in a set of six, at price not too much different to the equivalent cost of buying the same set at your market.
Also, if you break a genuine one that you have bought from a major tool supplier, it might be a trifle easier to get a replacement from them (and Stanley) than to get the seller at the market to replace it.

Can't be any poorer quality than the genuine ones.
Only ever had Lufkins, bought 2 Fatmax's on sale. One snapped at the 600mm mark after 3 weeks, the other stopped retracting after 3 months.
If I don't lose the Lukins first, the numbers usally wear off the first 300mm before they break.
Notice how Irwin and Stanley are pushing their Butt chisels more?
40% less chisel for the same price!

Thanks for the replies, but the ones at my local market aren't butt chisels - they are normal length ones.

Go suss out the packaging and chisel in a tool shop first, then check out the market ones, if you can't pick the difference you should be pretty safe.
I bought a 'Stan Lee' chaulkline from one of those cheap Chinese tool/junk shops years ago. Looked identical, packaging and all. Except the name.

I saw some at the Bega markets earlier in the year, pretty sure they were genuine. Still, at $20 a chisel the sets would be near as cheap as someone mentioned without any risk. I've had good experiences with the three I have, which were second hand and still going strong.

Keep your eyes open at the markets for Titans and Bergs, and Wards too! I'm sure you can buy a cheaper thing than a Fatmax for opening paint cans.
Cheerio,
Virg.
PS the new Stanley chisels are getting some fair reviews. Have we got local prices on them yet?

Virgil, I think the new Stanley SW 750 series chisels are chalk and cheese to the Fatmax that caught the OP's eye, and are targeted at an entirely different use and user.
Jim Davey is advertising the new Stanley 750s in sets of four or eight (see here).
Chrism3 - There is lots of info on this Forum about brand name chisels (Irwin, Bahco, Narex, Stanley, etc., etc.) at prices that are very competitive to your "market specials". I suggest that you search out some of this to inform your decision-making if you want to buy a new set.
I like the "no questions asked" replacement guarantee that usually comes with brand-name tools such as these when you buy them from a major tool supplier. Also, as ClintO points out, there are some really good deals at the moment (End of Financial Year sales and the like).
Cheerio
